Peony Season in Ontario: When and Where

Peonies are arguably the most beloved flower of Ontario's spring season. Their brief availability is part of what makes them so prized. Here is everything you need to know.

When is peony season in Ontario?

Locally grown Ontario peonies are in season from approximately late May through the end of June, with peak availability in the first two weeks of June. The exact window shifts by about a week in either direction depending on weather.

This means a typical peony season in Ontario lasts about 5 to 7 weeks. Outside of this window, peonies are available from import suppliers but the quality and stem length are often inferior to locally grown product.

Where do Ontario peonies come from?

Peony farms in Ontario are primarily located in Niagara Peninsula, Durham Region, and the Holland Marsh area north of Toronto. Some flower markets in Toronto also source peonies from farms in British Columbia, which shares a similar climate and season.

Outside of Canadian season, peonies are imported from Alaska (slightly later season), Chile (winter), France (spring/early summer), and the Netherlands. These imports can be excellent, but the peak Ontario local season still offers the freshest product and the widest colour range.

Peony colours available in Ontario

The most commonly available peony colours from Ontario sources are soft blush pink (the most abundant), deep rose pink, white, and cream. Coral and red peonies are less common. Lavender peonies exist but are rare and typically only available through specialty order.

How to buy peonies at peak quality

Buy peonies when they are still in tight bud form, slightly squishy to the touch. Fully open peonies at the shop are past their prime for vase life. Tight buds will open beautifully at home over 2 to 3 days.

Avoid peonies that have any brown on the petals, papery outer petals, or that have already started to open at the florist. Those will not last more than a day or two at home.

How to make peonies last longer

Peonies are sensitive to heat. Keep them in the coolest room in your home, away from sunny windows and heating vents. Change the water every two days and re-trim the stems each time. Remove any leaves below the waterline.

A well-cared-for peony in a cool environment will last 5 to 7 days. In a warm room with no water changes, you might get 3 days. Temperature management is the most impactful variable.

During Ontario peony season (late May through June), we source locally grown peonies for our bouquets. If you are specifically ordering peonies, let us know and we will confirm availability. Our peak season peony arrangements sell out quickly, so ordering a few days in advance is advisable.

Outside of June, we can still often source peonies through our import suppliers. The quality varies but is usually good. Ask us about availability if you are ordering outside the Ontario season.
